When's the Best Time to Put Up a Chain Link Fence in Lincoln?

You're probably wondering, when's the ideal time to get that chain link fence installed? It's a fair question, and honestly, it depends a lot on our Nebraska weather. Generally, I tell folks the sweet spot is late spring through early fall. Think April, May, June, and then September, October.

Why those months? Well, for one, the ground isn't frozen solid. Trying to dig post holes in January or February here in Lincoln is a nightmare, and it's not good for the equipment or the quality of the install. The ground needs to be workable. Plus, those months usually give us more consistent temperatures. Extreme heat or cold can make working with the materials tougher, and it's just plain harder on the crew.

That said, don't rule out summer entirely. If we get a stretch of moderate weather, it can be a great time. Just be prepared for potential delays if we hit a heatwave or a string of those pop-up thunderstorms we get. We always keep an eye on the forecast, believe me.

Weather Conditions That Affect Installation

When you're dealing with outdoor work like fence installation, weather is always a factor. Here's what we're looking at:

  • Frozen Ground: This is the big one. If the ground is frozen more than a few inches deep, we can't dig proper post holes. We need to get those posts set deep enough to withstand our strong winds and keep your fence sturdy for years.
  • Heavy Rain: A little drizzle? No problem. But pouring rain turns the job site into a muddy mess, makes it unsafe for the crew, and can compromise the integrity of the post holes. We'll reschedule if it's too wet.
  • High Winds: Trying to stretch chain link fabric in 30+ mph winds is a losing battle. It's dangerous, and you won't get a tight, even finish. We'd rather wait for a calmer day.
  • Extreme Heat/Cold: While we can work in a range of temperatures, anything too extreme slows us down and can be a safety concern for the crew. Plus, some materials can be harder to work with in very cold weather.

We always communicate any weather-related delays with you. My goal at Valley Fencing Co. is to get your fence installed right, the first time, safely.

Protecting Your Chain Link Fence Year-Round

A chain link fence is pretty low-maintenance, but a little attention goes a long way to making it last. Here's what I recommend:

  • Clear Debris: Especially after a windy storm, check for branches or other debris that might have gotten caught in the mesh. Heavy snow drifts can also put a lot of pressure on the bottom of the fence, so try to clear it away if you can.
  • Check for Damage: Walk your fence line a couple of times a year. Look for any bent posts, loose ties, or damaged fabric. Sometimes a rogue lawnmower or a playful pet can cause minor issues that are easy to fix if caught early.
  • Keep it Clean: If you notice dirt or grime building up, a simple spray with a garden hose is usually all it takes. For tougher spots, a mild soap and water solution with a brush will do the trick.
  • Address Rust (if it's not galvanized): Most modern chain link fences are galvanized, meaning they're coated to resist rust. If you have an older, non-galvanized fence and see rust, you can clean it off with a wire brush and apply a rust-inhibiting paint to protect it further.
  • Trim Vegetation: Keep bushes, vines, and trees away from your fence. They can grow into the mesh, causing damage over time, and make it harder to access for maintenance. We've seen vines completely engulf sections of fence in older neighborhoods like the Near South.

Chain link is a tough, practical fencing option, and with a little care, it'll serve your Lincoln home well for decades. If you ever have questions or need a hand with repairs, don't hesitate to give Valley Fencing Co. a call. We're always here to help out our neighbors.
